What causes an itchy, flaky scalp?
Not sure what you have? You just know it itches, flakes, or feels tight. Many conditions overlap, and it’s genuinely difficult to tell them apart just by looking in the mirror.
We use a Trichoscope (microscope) to examine the scalp surface up close, identifying the specific issue so we can treat the root cause, not just the symptom.

Clues in an itchy or flaky scalp
Greasy, yellow scales
Often points toward seborrhoeic dermatitis, especially around the hairline and eyebrows.
Dry, silvery patches
Thick, well-defined plaques with a silvery sheen are more typical of scalp psoriasis.
Fine, powdery flakes
Small, dry flakes that shake loose easily are usually simple dandruff.
Sudden redness or burning
A reaction that appears soon after a new product often points to an allergic response.

Who gets an itchy or flaky scalp
Itching and flaking can affect anyone, at any age, and often comes and goes with a genuinely wide range of triggers. It’s rarely just one thing:
- Stress
- Cold, dry winters
- Harsh shampoos
- Hormonal changes
- New hair products
Why a proper diagnosis matters
While GPs are excellent, they often lack the time or specialised equipment to examine the scalp in detail. They may prescribe a generic steroid cream that masks the issue temporarily, rather than treating what’s actually causing it.
Trichoscopic examination
We examine the scalp surface at high magnification to see exactly what’s happening at the follicle, not just guess from the surface.
Targeted treatment plan
Once we know the real cause, we can treat it directly instead of masking it with a generic steroid cream.
